| Venice Square is one of the biggest and most central
squares of Rome, point of convergence of many streets and a convenient
meeting point for tourists, thanks to its position and to its majestic
Victor Emmanuel II Monument. This monument is the symbol of the
unification of Italy in 1870 with Rome as the capital city. It was
begun in 1885 and inaugurated in 1911. In the Victor Emmanuel II
Monument, at the foot of the statue of Rome, is the National Shrine,
the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Since 1921 the tomb has contained
the remains of a soldier who died in the 1915-18 war. |
