The church was consacrated in the 5C by Sixtus III
(432-40), although it was probably built on a much older construction.
This church contains the famous Mose’ by Michelangelo. It
also attracts pilgrims who come to venerate the chains which bound
S. Peter. The broad interior is divided into a nave and two aisles
by two rows of Doric marble columns.
The medieval décor was altered in the 17C and 18C: the nave
was vaulted and painted with frescoes. There are also the tombs
of Antonio and Piero Pollaiolo.
