ROME HOMEPAGE > SPANISH STEPS AREA > SPANISH STEPS

It got its name in the 17C when the Spanish Ambassador took up residence in the Palazzo di Spagna. It’s one of the most beautiful square in Rome and the famous steps are one of Rome’s most famous sights, thanks to their popularity as meeting point and to the position at the heart of the city’s shopping area. The steps: the idea to link Piazza di Spagna to the french-owned church of Trinità dei Monti was first proposed by the French Ambassador, Eitenne Gueffier. The steps were built between 1723 and 1726 by De Sanctis in accordance with designs by De Specchi, showing the Baroque taste for perspective and tromp-l’oeil. From the upper terrace there is an excellent view of the city.
