The exterior façade of this gateway in the
Aurelian Wall (3 century), was built by Pius IV between 1562 and
1565 on the site of the ancient Porta Flaminia. In 1655, the Queen
Christina of Sweden, converted to Roman Catholicism, commissioned
to Bernini to decorate the façade with two scrolls supporting
a garland under the star of the Chigi coat of arms.
